About this badge

This course introduces students to major works and themes of American art. We emphasize the forging of an American identity as we study iconic portraits by Copley and Stuart, mid-century genre paintings by Mount and Bingham, Hudson River School landscapes of Cole and Durand, and architecture and design objects of the era. Three lecture classes plus five sessions scheduled in the American Wing of the Metropolitan Museum. Intimate first-hand study of the paintings, sculpture, period rooms, and furnishings of the museum's superb collection encourage students' appreciation for the varied art of this era.
