Developed in conjunction with professionals from NYU Langone Medical Center, the Certificate in Clinical Documentation Improvement is an advanced-level program for those who seek to further their careers in health information management (HIM).
Clinical documentation improvement (CDI) is a growing field that attracts professionals from diverse backgrounds, including nursing, health information management/coding, and quality and case management. The position of clinical documentation specialist (CDS) requires a unique skill set for promoting quality documentation and medical record integrity. CDI professionals work with providers to educate them about clinical documentation requirements and to promote improvements in documentation.
Upon completion of this certificate, students are able to:
- Understand role of the CDS and the function of CDI programs in hospitals
- Proficiently apply ICD-9 coding
- Apply clinical knowledge to analyze and to interpret medical records
- Understand query concepts and formulate physician queries
- Facilitate improvement in the overall quality of documentation
To enter this certificate program, the applicant must be a registered nurse (R.N. license) or a medical professional (M.D. or D.O.) with at least two years of clinical experience, or the applicant must be a coding professional (CCS, CCS-P, RHIT, or RHIA) with at least two years of coding experience in an acute-care setting.
