About this badge
In the television and film industries, the producer’s role is a combination of entrepreneurship, managerial skills, and creativity. Students learn the responsibilities of a producer and gain an understanding of the underlying business management principles. This certificate comprises three levels of classes that cover the creative, executive, and administrative responsibilities of an independent producer, and teaches the skill set needed to become an effective member of a producer’s unit.
Upon completion of the program, students know how to:
- Define roles and responsibilities for producers: executive, visual effects, pre- and post-production, manager, and coordinator
- Work with script selection and the vetting process
- Develop a budget, identify typical expenditure areas, and track expenses during production
- Put together an investment prospectus and identify likely investors
- Audition actors and put together a cast
- Build a crew of writing, film, graphics, music, and technical professionals
- Create a pitch for networks, cable channels, or studios
- Read, understand, and utilize basic contracts and legal business agreements between the different components of a production company, the crew, and the investors
