About this badge

From Bosnia and Rwanda to the current crisis in Syria, journalists have long been at the forefront of reporting human rights violations. This multidisciplinary course combines historical and philosophical approaches to human rights with print and online journalism, photojournalism, and multimedia and investigative data journalism to study the historical and contemporary relationship between human rights and journalism. Critical readings of classic and contemporary journalists such as Martha Gellhorn, Nicholas Kristof, Philip Gourevitch, and Anna Politkovskaya will help to inform our approach, as will the works of photojournalists Ron Haviv, Sebastião Salgado, and Susan Meiselas. You will have the opportunity to pursue a human rights-focused story in the medium of your choosing as one of the course projects. The course will be complemented by guest speakers working in the intersections of human rights, journalism, and photojournalism.
