“Cultural criticism” can be broadly defined as writing about ideas for a general audience. Explore strategies for such writing—whether opinion pieces, arts reviews, or essays—by analyzing work by “public intellectuals” and by completing short weekly assignments on topics of your choice. Bring your own experiences and interests to the table, and help your classmates craft tight narratives with optimally effective language through workshop-style critiques. Also, learn how to pitch article ideas to editors and to navigate the professional editorial world. Guest speakers and group outings may be included.
