About this badge

Grassroots creative projects offer unique opportunities for debating conflict and justice, and they can sometimes serve as catalysts for cultural and political change. But how exactly do these activities make space for change--and what societal underpinnings are necessary to sustain the change these works seek to create? Through case studies, explore the work of the Belarus Free Theatre, the Philadelphia-based Mural Arts Program, The Freedom Theatre in the West Bank, the work of the Afghanistan Human Rights and Democracy Organization, and the New York-based Bond Street Theatre in Afghanistan. Also, learn about the oral history project, Badna Naaref (We Want to Know), in Lebanon and the hip hop dance and social movement in Ghana and South Africa. Gain practical knowledge and skills in arts-based approaches to peacebuilding through participatory exercises and activities, readings, and group discussions. During the course, develop an outline for an arts-based community project.
