The art of shaping a manuscript into a publishable book is a key skill for those interested in careers in publishing. This workshop will provide an intensive, hands-on exploration of the many facets of book editing. Topics will include how to select a book for publication and to best work with the author and with stakeholders in the publishing company itself, such as marketers, publicists, and members of the sales team. Students will also explore the intricacies of genre, pacing, plot, and voice, as well as research and accuracy, where appropriate. They will work on unpublished manuscripts, both fiction and non-fiction, in multiple different genres. Peer review will be incorporated into the classroom process. Some knowledge of the publishing process is highly advantageous but not required.
This course is part of the Publishing Boot Camp Series, a collaboration between the NYUSPS Center for Publishing, and Center for Applied Liberal Arts.
